I would really like to think that my Boys really liked the rain we had today and found it very refreshing instead of thinking that they weren’t smart enough to stay inside where it was dry.

Glow

So last night another big rain storm blew through the area. The sky reminded me of one of the Poltergeist movies - it seemed like it was constantly lit until the storm passed. My house lights flickered within minutes of the rainfall and then I totally lost power. It was the first time I've lost power since the October Storm.

I'm happy to say that I was pretty well prepared, relatively speaking. No big house generators or anything like that for me, but for the hours I was without power, I was pretty comfortable. I knew exactly where my flashlights, batteries and candles were, along with my radio and of course my glow sticks!

After the October Storm, I came across a good deal on glow sticks and stocked up on a ton of them. Last night was the first time I had the chance to use them for real - not just for play. My house was aglow with yellow and green, and I was able to almost finish the book I'm reading.

For the record, the yellow glow sticks are definitely brighter, but it seems like the green ones last longer. So I have to remember that yellow is for reading and 'doing' things and green is for general don't-trip-over-anything lighting. Of course, I could always have used my flashlight or my Coleman lantern, but hey - glow sticks are way more fun :)

I heard that during the October storm, people in office buildings were using glow sticks to make arrows on the ground pointing to bathrooms and exits. I thought that was really innovative.

I have no idea what time the power came back on - I left a light on so I would know, but I was asleep. I remember getting up to turn off the light, but I never looked at the clock.

Fortunately, there didn't appear to be any damage in the yard... the way the wind was whipping through, I thought for sure that there would be a ton of branches all over the place. There was a small inflatable pool in one on my side ditches tho'. And the chickens seemed to have weathered the storm just fine.

I'm so sick of rain. Hopefully that's the last of it for a while!

Piggy Bunny Rabbits

Isn't it amazing how nice your lawn looks right after it's cut - no matter how many weeds there are?

The barn swallows were swooping away as I was mowing the lawn today. I haven't seen those guys in a long time. They are so much fun to watch as they go after the bugs. They make me smile :)

I realized for the first time today that the half-tree that came down last week also took down a big chunk of my pear tree that was next to it :( I hope I will at least get some pears this year. I won't be able to really tell until I get around to cleaning up the dead-fall first. Maybe I'll have time this weekend.

It must be because of the holiday that there are so many police cars around the last week or so. I'm seeing them *everywhere*.

I wish it would stop raining. My basement is never going to dry out at this rate.

Does anyone out there want a couple of rabbits? I have two in my yard that won't leave my garden alone. I've never had such a problem before. The robins and I used to share the strawberries - there was plenty for all of us. Not this year. Piggy Bunny Rabbits have spent all their time the past couple of weeks eating them all. The Piggy Bunny Rabbits have also eaten my peas, beets and lettuce. I've always had rabbits in the yard, but they never bothered my garden before - I don't know what's changed. I planted my corn, green beans and cucumbers late, so they haven't come up yet - but I need a plan to save them now. I'm thinking of trying a small electric fence around the garden. I have a solar panel kit that I picked up a couple of years ago for another project that never came to fruition - so I'm thinking of trying to use that to set up something. I have to do something soon - otherwise there won't be a point of me having a garden. Except for my peppers and tomatoes. They haven't touched those. Yet. And why don't the eat the weeds?

Rain, Rain, Go Away

I know that rain is good for the flowers and the trees, but I need a break already. It seems like it's been raining almost everyday for the past month. I know we've had days in between that were rain-free, but I need a nice stretch of good weather to get the things done outside that I need to. I'd also like some dry days left over to relax and enjoy some good mosquito-free time. That's not too much to ask, is it?

What's been weird too, is the kind of rain we've been getting. We've had a lot of hard fast rains. I also don't remember ever having thunder/lightening storms in such abundance and so close together. And crazy clouds. I'm going to have to make a point of keeping my camera handy to get pictures of them.

I'm betting the weather forecasters love this kind of weather :)
