Thursday Bullets

• I finally caught whatever it is going around.  It’s not too horrible yet… it started with the sore throat thing and has progressed to the whole stuffy head thing.  Hopefully it will start the going-away thing instead of the getting-worse thing 

 

• I had my six-month checkup at the dentist today.  No cavities, but I need a filling replaced.  Pretty much the same thing in my book 

 

• After the dentist, I had some extra running around to do, which led me to take the Expressway home during rush hour.  I got on at Union near Genesee and thought it quite interesting that the overhead electronic board at that entrance gave the minutes to the 198 and the 190.  That’s the first time I’ve seen that and I think it’s a good idea – especially if you travel that route daily… it’s nice to know how heavy traffic is.

 

• I’m sick of the rain.

 

• Why is it that all day long I think of things that I want to blog about, but when I sit down at the computer at night, I can’t remember most of them?

Pendleton Farmers’ Market

What a great holiday weekend it was!  We couldn’t have asked for nicer weather, that’s for sure.  I had lots of family time and lots of ‘me’ time – it was great 

 

Lots of news to catch up on…

First off, I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been volunteering on a town committee.  I think it’s safe to mention it now because the time is close and I don’t think I can jinx anything too much now    

This year the Town of Pendleton will start sponsoring a farmers' market.   It starts this Thursday and will run until October 28th.  Our market will be different in that it will be striving for 100% "Make It, Bake It or Grow It".  The market is for farm vendors who are primary producers or growers of local agricultural products.  100% of the products offered for sale are grown and/or processed by the farm vendor on New York State lands, mostly from Niagara County.  You can't beat buying right from the farmer! 

Besides fruits and vegetables, the Pendleton Farmers' Market will also feature fresh meats and poultry, including certified Angus, pork, chicken and duck.  Among the other items available will be eggs, maple syrup, organic honey, breads and baked  goods, nursery plants and wines from our own Niagara Wine Trail wineries.  We will also have a Community Group table for local groups to use for fundraising, education and stuff like that.  We have some pretty exciting groups lined up throughout the summer…

The market will be open every Thursday, rain or shine, from 3pm - 8pm right by the water tower next to the Pendleton Town Hall at 6570 Campbell Boulevard in Pendleton, between Bear Ridge Road and Feigle.

Everyone has been working really hard on this and I am really hoping that everything goes smooth on opening day     If you happen to be in the Pendleton area on a Thursday evening this summer or fall, I hope you stop by and check out the market 

 

Other things in the news:

• I found out that I did not have food poisoning last week.  Evidently there is some kind of stomach bug going around that mimics food poisoning and that’s what I caught.  I know at least three other people who went through the same thing I did throughout the week.  I’m glad to know that I didn’t get sick from ice cream and maraschino cherries 

 

• The baby robins have flown the coop, so to speak… they have fledged and the nest is now empty.  Last year I used to see Mom and Dad Robin around the yard with the babies, showing them how to look for food feeding them, but so far I haven’t seen any sign of them hanging around…

 

• My neighbor told me to watch out for a cow in my yard.  Evidently one of the cows from the farm next door keeps escaping its pasture.  I kind of hope the cow makes onto my property – how many people can say that they’ve had a rebel cow wandering around their yard?     As long as it didn’t do any damage 

 

• Remember the cat I had wandering around my yard that I wanted to get fixed?  My neighbor said he found her dead in his yard    Poor thing.  I’m going to miss seeing her around.  And no, I’m not getting my own cat.

 

• I had an adventure in give Banana and Nugget a half-bath this weekend… they were both starting to get a little bit of ‘poopy butt’ and I wanted to take care of it before it got out of hand and really gross.  It wasn’t as harried an experience as I thought it was going to be – I wish I could have taken pictures of the ‘during’, but I didn’t trust The Ladies to sit still in the water by themselves     I thought that Banana – definitely the fiestier of the two would have given me the most problems, but she was super good about it.  I think that she really enjoyed it    And Nugget, who I figured to just sit there and do nothing, complain non-stop the whole time.  I also learned that Banana is a bigger pig than Nugget.  I hadn’t picked either one up in a while and I can say that Banana is a lot heavier!  We all know what nice soft, fuzzy butts The Girls have normally – well now they would rival any Gund stuffed animal… here is a picture of a couple pretty indignant chicken butts while they are still wet…

Relief?

So last night was the first time in a week that I slept straight through to the morning.  And today was the first day in a week I didn’t feel like throwing up (and I didn’t!).  My side still hurts, but it only feels like someone punched it fifty times instead of putting an axe through it fifty times.  I’m hoping that recovery is on it’s way    I haven’t been able to drink anywhere near the amount of water I’m supposed to, which I’m sure isn’t speeding up my recovery, but I’m trying my best 

I am sooooo hungry.  I guess after not eating for a week will do that to a person.  And all they are showing on TV are pizza and sub commercials.  I am so dying for a slice of real pizza – not the frozen stuff, but a real fresh-from-the-pizzeria pizza.  But I know that there is no way my stomach could handle that right now.  Ugh.

My chickens saw their first snow today.  At first they didn’t know what to make of it, but once they found out it tasted OK, they were fine with it.  I wish I had the energy to get pictures, but I just didn’t have it in me today…

Tomorrow is going to be a hugely busy day.  I hope I make it.

Eco-Shapes???

I've been pretty lucky... I haven't been sick in a long time - probably four or five years at least (not counting my back problems). The past couple of months, it seems like I've been having health issues pop up one after the other. Not feeling good is so not fun. It's even more not fun when you get a long weekend off from work and end up spending most of it home in bed hacking up a storm. Ugh. I think next year, it's time for a booster flu shot.

I am not a water drinker. Everyone I know thinks I'm crazy because I don't like to drink water. I think everyone is crazy because they do like to drink water. I really don't understand why. It tastes awful - and it doesn't matter if it is bottled or from the tap. Yuck. However, that being said, I decided for a little while to try drinking water to see if it would help me feel better health-wise. I couldn't say if it helped or not - my experiment didn't last very long. I repeat: water = yuck.

During my short-lived water drinking trial, I did come across something that aroused my curiosity: Who came up with the term 'Eco-Shape Bottle'? I would understand an 'Ergonomically-Shaped Bottle' or even an 'Eco-Friendly Bottle', but 'Eco-Shape'???? What a dumb name.

One of my chickens has started laying eggs again - I hope that means that spring is around the corner. I usually don't mind winter, but this year is beginning to border on ridiculous. It's the wind that makes everything so miserable - I'm really tired of wind chills constantly in the single digits. What good is winter if you can't go out and enjoy it? I'm ready for spring.

I did get treated to see Stomp over the weekend at Shea's. I haven't been to Shea's in a really long time - the theater was just as fancy as I remembered. And even tho' I wasn't feeling 100%, I still enjoyed the show a lot. I've wanted to see Stomp perform for a quite a while, and I'm glad I finally got to. Thanks again Randy :-)

Even tho' this video is old, I just came across it again. I still find it as funny as I did the first time I saw it.

Cooped Up

I haven't been sick in a long time. Fortunately I'm not really sick - I think I missed the worst of a sore throat, but I'm still sneezing and coughing a lot. If this lasts much longer, I think I'm going to regret not getting a flu shot this year.

To say that yesterday was a stressful day at work is a huge understatement.

My chickens really surprised me this morning when I went out to make sure that they had food and water and to clean out the coop. Since the weather has gotten cold out, they've been pretty much hanging out inside their coop, only venturing outside when I throw them some extra goodies. Except the other day. Mr. Rooster got a little discombobulated. He was funny... he wanted to run out of my way, except he really didn't want to put his feet in the snow. He actually flew quite a bit away, which really surprised me. Their pinions are clipped, so supposedly the chickens can't fly any big distances. Mr. Rooster managed some pretty good flying, tho'. When he landed on top of one of my out-buildings, I really thought that either I wouldn't see him again, or he would be stuck there. In the end, he joined the Ladies as he should have. But he didn't touch much snow :) I feel a lot better now knowing the fact that if a coyote or fox got near them, my chickens would have a fighting chance of getting away - which is good. But anyway, getting back to this morning - I went to get some feed and stuff and lo and behold, there were my chickens wandering around. I think that either they were getting antsy being cooped up all the time (Hee hee - get it? Cooped up? I made a funny!), or they have finally gotten used to the snow and decided that it was OK to walk around in it. Either way, I was really surprised to see them out and about.




And while we are on the subject of the chickens, I am happy to say that their feathers are all filling in rather nicely and aren't so scraggly-looking any more. Except for one of the hens, but I think that she is just behind schedule from the rest of them. Mr. Rooster is turning back to his manly, handsome self again...




It seems like lately I've been doing a lot of stuff, but not really getting much done, if that makes any sense. I really need to work on my prioritizing and accomplishing more things from my Must Do list as opposed to my Want To Do list. That sure doesn't sound like fun. ~sigh~
